I have a *slight* obsession right now. A little something called "Outlander". Oh. my. word. It started about a month ago when I decided to watch the Starz "Outlander" series on tv. Eight episodes later, I was left hanging with "WHAT HAPPENS NOW?!". Unbeknownst to me, the show was based on Outlander, a book series by Diana Gabaldon. Two days later, thanks to Amazon Prime, the first three books were at my doorstep. If you are unfamiliar with the story, the gist is Clarie, an English nurse, goes back in time from 1940's to 1740's Scotland. She falls in love in Jamie, a Scottish Highlander and outlaw. You'll need a candy stripe stencil. If you don't have one, you can make one! Print out the pattern on cardstock. You can cut out the stencil with an exacto and ruler (and a steady hand) or a scrapbook paper cutter. Obviously, this method makes a disposable stencil. But it will do in a pinch! This has inspired me to cookie some of my favorite characters from the books. And since the male lead character is Scottish, I had to include some plaid cookies. Now, I do not claim to know anything about Scottish tartan-don't fuss at me. But I do know a little something about cookie tartan!
Let's make some bonny plaid cookies! I started off with a square cookie that I flooded light bluish gray. It is completely dry. Now, time to airbrush! I decided to use violet to airbrush the thicker open areas of the stencil. It's not a big deal that the smaller lines got a little airbrush too- I'll airbrush over them later. Now turn your stencil 90 degrees and airbrush violet again in the larger open areas. Clean your airbrush and load your selected color for the smaller lines. I chose royal blue. Carefully and lightly airbrush the smaller lines. Turn your stencil 90 degrees again. Take care to line up the stencil with the already airbrushed lines. Lightly airbrush the small lines again. The colors were a little too bright for me, so I lightly airbrushed black over the entire cookie. I wanted a muted, almost dingy look. The look of well-worn tartan. I really like how they turned out, especially with their corresponding cookies. I don't think it's a coincidence that plaid is a hot print for this fall. Here's an airbrushing tip! Try out your pattern by airbrushing on ordinary printer paper. You'll be able to practice control of the airbrush gun, as well as see how the colors interact with one another. Keep in mind, though, that airbrush colors can be altered by the flood color beneath. Check out the plaids I made for fall and winter cookies! Seriously- how cute is this plaid polka-dot pumpkin?! Now, if you don't mind, I have to get back to the adventures of
Jamie and Claire! Have fun making your Bonny Plaids!

These are awesome! Love the plaid and how you "aged" it. Now, to get over my fear of my airbrush. Hmmm. I may need to rewatch Outlander for some more inspiration. ;)

Hi Jodi! Have no fear of the airbrush!! Next to my KK, it's my favorite decorating tool. Try airbrushing on paper like the tutorial above, even without stencils. Maybe even try airbrushing coloring book pages, just to learn how to control the gun. By the way, you never need an excuse to rewatch Outlander- I'm on my 3rd run-through of the episodes now!

These are do unbelievably cute! You're so talented! I shared this page on twitter and tagged Diana Gabaldon, Terry Dresbach(Outlander costume designer), Sam Heughan and Caitriona Balfe. I hope they see these. They truly are the most incredible cookies. All of your cookies look AMAZING! And welcome to the awesome world of Outlander. I just started 'Drums of Autumn' book #4. I just can't put the books down. And the TV show is fantastic!

THANK YOU, Jamie, for believing my sweets where Twitter-worthy, especially by tagging some really important people! It has been a long time since a book series has emotionally moved me the way that Outlander has. My hubby knows when I am hooked when I cheer or sob while reading. 10/22/2014 03:49:00 am
God I love these! Great job on the plaid airbrushing! You mentioned that you didn't know much about Scottish Tartans...I commissioned a tartan for Caitriona Balfe, the actress who plays Claire, and the weaver really educated me about the process. I did a write up on our fansite for Cait if you're interested in learning about it. The finished product came out really beautiful--we sent her a handwoven silk stole for her casting anniversary and had it registered with the Scottish Tartan Register. http://www.caitrionation.com/?p=31

WOW oh WOW, April!! I will seriously consider joining Caitrionation on FB! I looked briefly at the page and saw the tartan you mentioned- it is GORGEOUS!!! I have been trying to avoid some of the Outlander pages on purpose because I don't want any kind of plot spoilers (since I am 2/3 of the way through Journey). I won't even read the backs of the books because I want to be surprise at every twist and turn.

Hi Jennifer! What a glorious obsession it is!! It has been a long time since a book has made me cheer out loud (or sob quietly in the bathroom) like the Outlander novels. I am still early in the series (about 2/3 of the way through Journey) and so happy that there are so many more books! I will definitely have to check out the Maryland Outlander Fans FB! I have been trying to avoid some of the pages because I don't want any plot spoilers. I want to experience the Outlander magic first-hand. 10/22/2014 10:42:57 am
These are amazing. You're a cookie genius! Welcome to the Outlander lovefest. =)

How adorable! I love the plaids, and of course wee cookie Claire and Jamie. And the standing stones! Really cute. I'm a recent convert to Outlander, too. I hadn't heard of it until I saw the premiere episode, and now a few months later I've read the first four books and am completely obsessed with both the novels and the show. :-)

Yay! Another Outlander newbie!! I am actually glad that I watched the show first. I think the actors are fantastic, and I don't want to imagine Claire and Jamie any other way.

These are so wonderful. I used to do a lot of cookie decorating a few years back. Especially at Christmas time. I loved it. Haven't done it in a while though recently did some with my 7 grandkids. It was not quite so "perfect" as yours. They range between 12 and 2 and the most important thing was to get as much candy and sparkles as they could on each cookie! Oh well - still lots of fun. Cookies are magic. You have an amazing talent and I admire the fact you have been successful in making this into a career. Good for you.
