Poppy Flowers as Royal Icing Transfers

5/24/2020

Picture
These royal icing poppy flowers can be lovely accents for cookies, cupcakes, and full-sized cakes for Memorial Day celebrations. Since they are royal icing transfers, they can be made weeks/months in advance. Or you can speed up the drying time by using a fan on low speed or a food dehydrator.

Tri-Color Flower Cookies

These tri-color flower cookies are the perfect way to use up leftover dough and icing! They're created by layering different icing colors in a single decorating bag (versus striping the inside of the bag with colors). Best of all, you can make them with whatever icing colors you have on hand! In this case, I had leftover red and navy blue icing- perfect for a patriotic platter of cookies! Deeply tinted icing is tough to re-purpose into another color because it's already saturated with food dye. So why not use it up to make some small treats to share with friends and family?

Lily of the Valley Decorated Cookies

It's amazing how the human mind works, and how certain smells can immediately transport you to a time and place of your past. The scent created by lily of the valley flowers is one of those hooks for me. It used to grow in the shade below my parent's bedroom room in the house where I grew up. Whenever I smell (or even see) lily of the valley flowers, I can picture them below that window. I'm transported back in time.
These lily of the valley cookies are simple to make, and they're perfect for spring cookie collections for Easter or Mother's Day.

Painted Dogwood Blossom

3/2/2017

My family tries to go camping in early spring, before the 'ordinary' trees, like maples and oaks, become full-leafed. There's just something about the glowing white or pink of a blossoming dogwood tree amidst the wakening hardwood trees. Along with daffodil flowers, dogwood blossoms are a sure sign that spring is here!

This tutorial is great for those cookie people are are new to painting on cookies (or who are shy and not-so-confident like me)! It's hopefully a *hard to mess up* kind of thing!

Ruffled Ribbon Roses

Royal icing transfers are a great way to use up extra icing, and can be stored indefinitely for future use. I like having these mini ruffled ribbon roses on hand because they can be quickly added to a cookie, speeding up the decorating process. And they're pretty, too!
I used a PME 56R for these tiny blossoms. They can be made with a bigger tip, but keep in mind that a bigger tip makes them not only wider but taller, too.

I have always admired magnolia trees and the blossoms they don. The rich, glassy leaves. The ginormous white silky blossoms. It's just amazing to me how a tree can produce such LARGE, beautiful flowers!

Forsythia Twig Wreath

I absolutely love early spring. The little glimpses of warmer weather in early spring beg me to open the windows for a bit, throw on my flip-flops, and leave the heavier coats on their hooks by the door.
My favorite, FAVORITE part of early spring?? THE FLOWERS! Especially daffodils and forsythia.  Maybe it's because they're my favorite color? Maybe it's because they are among the early spring bloomers? In any case, I love them. When I see their bright yellow buds, I know for sure that spring is coming.

Daffodil Royal Icing Transfers

Daffodils are my absolute favorite flower, hands down. They are commonly found in my favorite color (YELLOW!) and they are the sure sign that spring is well on its way.  What better way to celebrate these spring beauties than with icing?!
I have created a little video on how to make these pretty daffodils with royal icing.  Remember that I'm not a videographer by any stretch of the imagination, so don't laugh too hard at my film :)
But you'll get the idea on how to make these blooms to celebrate spring!

One of my favorite spring/early summer blooms are lilies. Take a look at how I made these beautiful flowers! I used a 6-pointed star cutter for my lily shape. A 6-petal flower shape could work too!
