Nosy Little Leprechauns

3/16/2014

In my house, my boys were fascinated with leprechauns- those nosy little green men that popped up around St. Paddy's Day. They knew the stories of how these mythical little creatures were greedy and ruthless in their endless search for gold coins, or any money for that matter. In hopes of seeing (and catching) one of these mysterious creatures, my kids would make "leprechaun traps" of sorts with assorted boxes and toys, baited with a few pennies and quarters. Overnight, the nosy leprechaun would spring the trap, steal the coins, but leave a little something sweet to commend the boys' efforts in trying to trap him.
So I decided to make a version of these nosy leprechauns-
NOSY in the literal sense!
Picture
WOW- that's a big nose.  Perfect for a nosy little creature!  Let's make them!
I used an upside-down baby face cutter. Find it here. When I bought it, I wasn't sure about the pointy-hair part- but it's perfect for a beard!

Time to decorate!
Picture
1.  Use a 20-second flesh color icing to pipe the face and ears.
Picture
3.  After the face has dried a bit, pipe two crescent moon shapes that will become the nostrils of our nosy leprechaun.
Picture
5.  Use the 20-second flesh color to pipe some ears and a big, bulbous nose. Immediately put the cookie in front of a fan or use a heat gun to crust the icing quickly.  Here's a heat gun that is similar to what I use.
Picture
6.  Use a 20-second green to pipe his derby-style hat and hat brim.
Picture
8.  Add a few final details- his eyes, mouth, eyebrows, and beard.
Picture
2.  Use a bit of yellow to make the brim of his hat.
Picture
4.  Use a 20-second redish-brown icing to pipe the beard.

Picture
A fan and/or heat gun is the key to getting your puffy icing to stay "puffy" without cratering!  Look at that big 'ol nose!  I just wanna pinch it :)

Picture
7.  After the hat dries a little, trim it with a little green icing.
Picture
9.  And of course, a shamrock.  He's a leprechaun, of course!
And there you are- some nosy leprechauns!

Pair them with some little pots of gold!

These are so cute!! I have puff envy... I've never used a heat gun, I think a little video tutorial on how you use one on your cookies would be cool. wink wink nudge nudge

Thanks for stopping by, Amanda! I'll definitely try to put together something in the future!
